Finding a Wedding Florist

Visit various directories as well as checking referrals from past brides on Star of the Day Certificates on the SABIA website.

Make initial appointments

Before your meetings have your wedding inspiration book ready with pictures gathered from wedding magazines of what arrangements you like, the look and feel as well as, if possible, pictures of your wedding venue and in particular the room you will be using.

Have your budget ready. Be realistic. Flowers are very expensive and do bear in mind that it will take the florist working non stop on your wedding alone at least 2 days to get everything ready.

Once you pick a florist

Ask for a proposal that outlines the cost of each arrangement, size and container. Also discuss moving the flowers from the chapel to the reception.

Insist upon a contract that clearly defines what you are paying for. Do check whether the contract is clear and defines what will be delivered and at what cost.

Opt for Mock-ups. It is worth paying the extra cost for mock-ups as this is where your vision comes to life and where you have the opportunity to make the changes you like. Do bear in mind that on the day it will not be possible.

Drying bouquet with Silica Gel

One of the ways to preserve your beautiful bridal bouquet is to dry it to preserve that precious memento of your special day!

Silica gel works the same way as sand but is a little cleaner and modern and can be reused.

The methodology is the same as sand drying.

Preserving your bridal bouquet

Getting Ready! This is fiddly and time consuming.

You will need a few tools:
Clean river sand
Sieve that you won't reuse for food again
A plastic box deep enough for the flowers to be totally submerged. A old ice-cream box would work.
Shears or very sharp scissors
Florists wire and tape
Quite a bit of patience

Firstly you need to prepare your flowers. The stems need to be about 5 cm long and the flowers need to be open.

Sieve the sand into your container to create a base. Then check which flower(s) will fit and NOT touch each other nor the sides. Ensure the flowers are standing upright and the petals are lovely and open.

Slowly, slowly keep on sifting the sand over the flowers and you can use a small paint brush to push the sand into the smaller little grooves.

Store in a dark dry and well ventilated place.

Check the flowers regularly to see whether they are drying. You may need to add more sand as the days go on.

Once they are completely dry carefully, carefully remove the sand from the flowers.

You will then be ready to rewire them into a bouquet shape or alternatively ask your florist to assist you.
