THE INDUSTRY IS WORTH R27 BILLION ANNUALLY

The results of the first Wedding Survey undertaken by SABIA (The South African Bridal Industry Academy) to determine the value of the industry indicates it is worth in excess of R27 billion annually.

The survey has determined what factors influence the bride’s choice when selecting wedding suppliers and how they source them and on what they are basing their decisions.

Some interesting results include the following:

  • Brides spent R52 million on their bouquets
  • More than 120,000 bottles of sparkling wine/champagne/wine are drunk to toast engagements annually
  • Average length of engagements are 6.5 months
  • R1.5 billion is spent on honeymoons both locally and abroad
  • 1.8 million hours of music is played at weddings by DJ’s and musicians
  • Brides spent R98 million on hair and beauty.  That does not include the makeup they have already purchased nor beauty treatments prior to the wedding.
  • 76% of parents still contribute to the cost of the wedding
  • The most popular colours for weddings are predominately white with blue, silver and green as accents
  • 45% of brides lost less than 5kg before their wedding

The survey included brides, brides-to-be and 13 different suppliers ranging from cake designers, beauty therapists to photographers and wedding venues.      The study is based on a combination of interviews and online surveys.   The survey was conducted by SABIA and analysis was undertaken by Catalyst.

Because the industry is so diverse and there is very little overlap between categories of suppliers the survey results have been split into categories (where we received sufficient responses for analysis) and the brides and brides-to-be.    To purchase the survey click here.

At the Road Shows we will be sharing the results of the survey and insight into how to further grow your business in this target market be it suppliers or brides and most importantly, how to reach them.   To book your seat at the venue relevant to you click here.

SABIA managed to generate a lot of buzz this weekend at the Dome – both about the company and about its members, making it an incredibly successful wedding expo for members and SABIA alike.

Wedding Expo at the Dome

Brides-to-be, grooms-to-be, and bride hopefuls arrived in hordes at the Coca Cola Dome in Northgate this weekend to get advice, ideas and inspiration for everything bridal.

the now infamous cake

We at SABIA had great fun and success leading the crowds on a “treasure hunt” for stamps in the form of a “passport”, which took them from member to member all around the Dome. After two days of people tirelessly walking to members to find out what they are about, the hunt for stamps culminated in a big draw, which took place at 15:30 at the SABIA stand on Sunday.

What made this a competition with a difference is that it allowed the people taking part to see all the exhibitors but to keep a focus. Many of the people who brought back their completed “passports” exclaimed over how much fun it was. It also made things a bit more interesting for the men as they were not just wandering around aimlessly, but actually had a purpose! It also gave people a chance to find out more about SABIA and SABIA’s members, which was the whole point of the compeition.

The overwhelming feedback was very positive and there was definitely a feeling of excitement and fun as people accumulated more and more stamps and got closer to the finish line (where they got to put the entry form in the huge fake cake at the SABIA stand).

The winner of the R30 000 wedding package offered in our competition (sponsored by some of our members) is Lize Victor. Congratulations Lize and good luck with your wedding plans!

Thanks to everyone who took part in the SABIA competition, we hope you had fun and learned a bit about our wonderful members.
