Over the centuries of time and as cultures have evolved so too have the customs. 

Here are a few customs through the ages, some are down right strange and others sentimental.

In English custom it is considered a good omen for the groom to pay an uneven amount to the minister on the day.

If you are of Scottish descent you may think about participating in a Scrammy!  This is when grooms throw loose change kept in sporran (kilts don't have pockets) to children at the wedding.

Staying in Scotland.  In order to demonstrate the groom was ready to settle down, his friends would fill a large basket (a creel) full of stones.  The groom would then carry this basket through the village untile the bride came out to kiss him, thus ending the "creeling" ceremony.

For a tribe in Nigeria called the Tiv has the groom and male friends or relatives catch the dinner, generally chickens whilst the females of his family prepare the sauce ingredients that include sesame seeds which represent fertility.  Once the above has been achieved can the meal be cooked but only by the married men in the family.
